CD Packaging project

8-bit Beck Variation - DHNN
Design Has No Name (DHNN) are an independant visual communication Studio who have come up with this CD package design. They are group of designers who are based in Buenos Aries, Argentina. "Our main aim is to provide each project with the best of our creative potential" which is clearly demonstrated with this unique outcome. DHNN are involved in many visual communication fields including branding and visual identity, motion graphics and animation, illustrstion and many more. The CD package design has no marketing purpose and is only a creative project DHNN decided to do to demonstrsate their creative abilities. This works goes under the category graphic design, music production and package design and was made in 2007. DHNN named this project beck 8.bit variation and its is an attribute to the Musician Beck and his EP album GameBoy Variations. This CD package design was found on the Behance Network, "the leading online platform to showcase and discover creative work. Creative professionals, from across industries, use Behance to create multi-media portfolios that showcase their work within the Network, as well as dozens of other partner sites and industry-specific, curated online galleries." This is a prototype packaging design for beck that has been inspired by 8-bit art which relates to music found in Beck's EP. The EP features four remixes of songs from an early album by Beck calld Quero. These remixes were produced by independant artists who use sounds from different early 8-bit video game devices such as the Game Boy. DHHN have added a video game catridge, possibly the SNES, as the CD casing and a booklet featuring more 8-bit design. The cover casing has a retro font with a pixelated fill that actually is part of the pixelated potrait picture in the cover of the main CD package. The design is composed of pixelated lines, rough and edgey shapes and a limited colour selection simlar to what you would find in 8-bit video games and artwork. As a graphic designer myself, I think they used pogrammes such as photoshop and illustrator to design the packaging which was eventually printed on thick black card. The SNES cartridge styled casing was most likely dont using injection moulding. This design reminded me of my childhood when I would spend countless of hours on my Game Boy as many other children did during their early years. I very much like this design because of how creative they were with teh CD casing and how the related their design perfectly with the music found on Becks EP.

VH1 greatest hiphop artists cd packaging - Julie Ruiz

This package concept was created by Julie Ruiz, who specilises in design, advertising, art direction, photography. Whether she was carving on park benches or spray painting her VW bus, art was always a natural part to her life. Self-expression, creativity, teenage boredom and rebellion motivated her to further her education and receive a design degree at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. So she has always thought outside the box with her work and it shows when you take a look at this particular packaged design. She is currently the Design Director at VH1 and is responsible for this idea. The conept titled 50 Greatest Hip Hop artists is themed on Hip Hop and celebrates 50 music artist's that have contriburted to the Hip Hop scence. The packaging is quite large seeing and is shaped as a stereo or "boombox" as some people may know it as so it the size is pretty large. It unflods to reveal images and annotaions of some bboy (breakdance) moves and come with freebee stickers. The material it looks like recycable card was used to construct the whole package design which relates to the fact early bboy's and bgirls (breakdancers) used peices of cardboard to train and practise their moves. The title is in stencil font relating to graffiti, another aspect of the culture. The package is composed of a printed stereo on the outside with printed images on the inside. My first thought when I saw this was bboying because it's something I enjoy doing when I'm not busy with art and design work. I am very much so in touch with Hip Hop culture because once I started to Bboy, I soaked up the culture immediately. I very much so like the concept, idea and design behind this CD package because I pay a particular interest in the Hip Hop culture.

Rolling Stones Paper Board CD Case - Jakebox

The Swedish company Jakebox devoloped this new innovative CD package design. Jakebox specialises in innovative media packaging who have gained recognition for their award wining packaging concept for CD and DVD. As well as offering unique CD/DVD packages, the also offer unique card packages. The Jakebox holds the CD in place with an ingenious designed folded "claw". The claw releases the CD when the cover is opened and locks it again by closing the cover. The original concept was a pure handmade, folded and erected packaging, but proved to impossible due to its difficulty to procude large quantities. The packaging is made of 100% paperboard weighing 70% less than standard clear plastic box which doesn't break if you drop it on the floor. This amazing and clever construction is designed and constructed in a machine with an output of 1800 packs an hour, which allows the Jakebox company to enter the huge and profitable market of the entertainment industry and competing with the plastic box generally sued to market CD's and DVD's. This is possible due to the companys cooperation with Strand Grafiska and HJ Mek. The graphic deisgn is by Zip Design, London as was designed to celebrate The Rolling Sones double disc "Rolled Gold +" compliation of hits. The special packaging features two gold and black Jakebox's in a slipcase printed by Strand Grasfiska. The graphic design pays tribute The Rolling Stones who have earned a world wide reputation as a succesful english rock band. It is composed in a black and white themed colour scheme with a cover composed of unique typography. My initial reaction to the package design was it looks like atoilet, but during the research I discoverd it was a "claw". I admire this package design because of its concept that uses paperboard and folds to create something unique with and efficient. I also like the fact that its eco-friendly.
